Take Back the Night Rally: Western Washington University

Western Washington University hosted a Take Back The Night Rally in Bellingham Washington Wednesday evening. The march aimed to raise awareness of a culture that teaches its women to be afraid to set foot outside at night. The rally allowed for women to protest at night in a large group, accompanied by Bellingham Police officers, in a safe environment of their peers. The Rally was organized by Kristy Hathaway, age 22, who is head of the Associated Students (AS) Women’s department. Their march began at WWU’s Performing Arts Center (PAC), and wound its way through Bellingham’s city and residential streets before finally ending up back at the PAC. One of the favorite chants of the evening was “Claim your body! Claim your rights! Take a stand! Take Back the Night!” as well as a slew of other creative mantras that were jubilantly shouted by all in attendance. When asked how she hoped the night went for everyone, Kristy responded that “I hope that everyone felt very empowered.”
